Playlist - 12/28/2014 - 1950s Rockabilly and Atomic Platters

Hi Folks.

This show was shortened to one hour by a spurts preemption, so we concentrated on two topics, both supported by excellent compilations from the folks at Bear Family.

Fred Kirby
The first part of the show was 1950s rockabilly from the classic Four Star record label.  Some sources date rock & roll to the mid-1950s with Bill Haley or Elvis Presley, but over the years, and especially today, we have heard on Red Rooster Party music dated from 1945 that sure sounds like rock & roll.

Following that segment we transitioned to songs and public service announcements related to the hysteria prevalent following the revelation of atomic weapons in 1945.  The topic appears to have been in continuous thought from Fred Kirby's first song about it in 1945 just days after Hiroshima through the early 1960s, and we heard a good sampling through that period.

We'll be back next Sunday, spurts preemption notwithstanding, so join us then.

Playlist - 12/21/2014 - Christmas

Hi Folks.

In our tradition of really digging into the roots of our musical traditions, we presented our Christmas show consisting of an eclectic array of music across the span of the 20th century.

We drew heavily on two compilations -- one being The Spirit of Christmas Past that collects seasonal music from the UK that is clearly influenced by American trends, and Where Will You Be Christmas Day?, an astonishing collection of seasonal music from 1917 to 1959.

We also drew from some Christmas gems of Spike Jones, and some cowboy Christmas music from Michael Martin Murphey, Riders In The Sky, and the Bar-J Wranglers.

We couldn't let the season go by without The Christmas Guest, a popular recitation performed for us this year by Andy Griffith.

We hope you enjoyed this show and will tune in for more early 20th century music next Sunday.

Playlist - 12/7/2014 - Remembering Ray Davis

Hi Folks.

Jim had to leave town on a business trip and was not able to be in the studio in person for this show, but he left behind an hour-long version of his tribute to Ray Davis, the D.C. and Baltimore bluegrass DJ who had passed away December 3rd.  Jim first aired a version of this show on his early Saturday morning midnight fill-in on WHUS, and updated it for this show.  Marti concluded the show with an hour of her own programming.

The Washington Post printed a good obituary for Ray Davis December 14th, and you may be able to see it here.

The Ray Davis tribute consisted of some of Ray's "Basement Tapes" -- recordings he made at Johnny's Used Cars in Baltimore or later in his own home studio.  When released, they were on Ray's own Wango (WON-go) label, named for his hometown in Maryland.

The Ray Davis part of the playlist is below.  Marti's part of the playlist will be added shortly.

Playlist - 11/30/2014 - Early Bluegrass

Jim's copy of "Just Let Me Fall" (1952)
Hi Folks,

Taking a cue from the midnight fill-in that Jim did early Saturday morning, this entire edition of Red Rooster Party consisted of early bluegrass music focused in the early 1950s.

Jim's copy of "Old Grey Goose" (1948)

Most of the songs were from JSP collections, a reissue label based in the UK, but we have some of the originals as well (see the illustrations.)

SONGWRITING CONTEST

Marti, our Red Rooster "Idea Person," suggested during the show that we run a songwriting contest for all talented, untalented, mostly human, tone deaf, musically-challenged, first-grade-graduates who know the difference between a polecat and a politician (or perhaps not).

THE RULES:

1. Title grabs you before the judges' store-bought teeth fall out or first sound of a note
2. Must include some number of the following topics:  trucks, trains, drinkin', cheatin', prison, mother, possums, kittens, shotguns, skunk cabbage, whitewashing, mules, hound dogs, overalls, outhouses.  More points for more topics used.  Creative additions are good for more points.
3. Song can be in the genres of old time, blues, bluegrass, gospel, or novelty
4. Song must be 3 minutes or less
5. Points will be awarded based on:  song title creativity, number of key topics used or creative additions, and the sensibility of the lyric (a jumble of words just won't do)
6. A recording must be submitted along with the lyrics.  Format can be anything from CD, cassette tape, MP3, or other.  May use any instrument(s) or none at all.
7. Submissions must be received by December 30, 2014.  Winners will be announced on Red Rooster Party January 4, 2015 or the first show not preempted after that date.  The song will be played on the show, or winners will have the option of performing the song live on the show. Our e-mail address will be provided to anyone requesting it via the comments on this page.  Mailed submissions can be sent to:

WHUS Radio
Attn:  Jim & Marti Red Rooster Party
UCONN, Student Union Building , Room 412
2110 Hillside Road , Unit 3008R
Storrs, CT 06268-3008

8. NO TALENT REQUIRED (or expected)

Now get those creative juices flowing!

Tune in next week, good Lord or UCONN sports preemptions willing and the creek don't rise

Playlist - 11/23/2014 - Jim's Parents' 65th Anniversary

Jim's Parents 11/23/1949
Hi Folks.

This edition of Red Rooster Party took place on the 65th anniversary of Jim's parents, both of whom still live in North Carolina.  To salute them, we played a group of songs that would have been on the radio 65 years ago (1949) by The Carter Sisters with Mother Maybelle and Chet Atkins.

We also had fun with super guitarists Merle Travis, Doc Watson, and Chet Atkins by playing duets with Chet and Merle and Chet and Doc.

Kenny Roberts
There was a short version of Marti's Bunkhouse with Western songs, and a special set of Kenny Roberts recordings.

The remainder of the show was great music from the 1940s and 1950s.

Tune in next Sunday at 2pm ET for another great show featuring our musical heritage.

Playlist - 11/16/2014 - African-American Ballads

Hi Folks,

Lead Belly (Huddie Leadbetter)
Today's show consisted of ballads, or songs that tell a story, from the African-American tradition.  Barry Pearson who wrote the liner notes to the Smithsonian Folkways release "Classic African-American Ballads" says "The African-American ballad-making era spanned roughly forty years, from 1885 to 1925, peaking between 1890 and 1910. Ballads were composed before 1885 and continued to be composed after 1925, but the major body of recognized ballads, especially those that became traditional, come from this period."

Many of the black ballads are intertwined with white musical traditions and the origin for some cannot be pinpointed to one or the other -- the music belongs to both.  The recognition of that sharing of musical tradition was much of the point of today's show.

We hope you enjoyed.

Playlist - 11/2/2014 - Trains, Love, Lust, etc.

Hi Folks,

We had no spurts preemption today and therefore had a full show.

The first half of the show was a reprise of sorts of the late night fill-in (see "Red Rooster Train Depot" entry) that Jim did early Saturday morning with a few changes.  We have just scratched the surface of the list of train song recordings, and we have plenty more for future shows.

The second half of the show included Canadian singer Kayla Hotte & Her Rodeo Pals, very very early recordings from black musicians, a couple of sets from the Dust-To-Digital set covering Love, Lust, and Contempt (though we didn't get to contempt), Mount Airy favorite Rafe Brady, and a good sampling of The South Carolina Broadcasters -- a great old-time group from Mount Airy, NC -- who just announced new member Anna Roberts-Gevalt.

We hope you enjoyed what you heard.  Tune in next Sunday (spurts notwithstanding) for some more great obsolete music.

Playlist - 10/26/2014 - Music from 1959 and Newer

Hi Folks.

We had an hour after the spurts preemption, so we focused on music from 1959 and later -- a different direction than the typical show that works from the 1920s forward.

The only exceptions to the date range were the opening Golden Gate Quartet number and a very early recording from Buck Owens that missed our arbitrary cut-off deadline by about three years.

Notable music included a song from one of Leroy Troy's early albums, requested music from Marty Robbins, a very late recording of the WBT Briarhoppers, and a late recording of Roy Rogers.  There was more along these lines.

We could be back next week following another spurts preemption, so give us a try around 3pm ET or look for our notice on our Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/WHUS.redroosterparty

Fill-in Playlist - 10/25/2014 - "Red Rooster Truck Stop"

Hi Folks,

Jim will be filling in on the Saturday morning midnight-1am time slot the remainder of the fall semester.  The fill-in will be loosely based on Red Rooster Party, so the playlists will be posted here.  For the first of these fill-ins, Jim called the show "Red Rooster Truck Stop" because most of the music was trucking songs interspersed with country comedy.

If you are up late Friday nights, tune in for an hour of fun and a blast from the past.

Playlist - 10/19/2014 - Old Time

Hi Folks.

Jim returned after missing the four previous weeks, but acknowledged his great debt to Marti for carrying on with Red Rooster Party in his absence.

After four weeks of doing the show solo, Marti asked Jim to program this show and give her a rest, so we had two hours of old time music.  Check out the playlist below.

The next show should be Sunday 10/26 around 3pm ET following some kind of UCONN spurts event.  Tune in!

Playlist - 10/12/2014 - Marti Solo (again)

Hi Folks.

Fate has conspired to keep Jim out of the WHUS studio for the last four Sundays including this one, but Marti has faithfully led the charge to bring good old fashioned music to the airwaves.

With just an hour left following spurts, Marti managed to bring a good bit of her favorites to the playlist including songs from Homer & Jethro, early Oak Ridge Boys,  Spike Jones, and a good bit of old-time music by old-time artists in the twilight of their careers such as Roscoe Holcomb and Clarence Ashley.

Jim will reunite with Marti on the air next Sunday, so be sure to tune in at 2pm or after spurts for what could be a full two-hour show of great old music from the early 20th century.

Playlist - 9/21/2014 - Marti Solo (Again)

Hi Folks,

We had another all-too-familiar spurts preemption this afternoon, but we had about an hour available for the show.  Marti was solo while Jim was in Canterbury to catch the Gibson Brothers/Bear Minimum show.  Marti did a great job which is especially notable for the fact that she hasn't been solo on the mic while engineering the show for more than an hour in the past five years, and she followed up by doing Bluegrass Cafe solo as well - a show she has not produced in well over five years.  Thank you, Marti!

There were a couple songs by The Golden Gate Quartet and Jimmy Murphy, followed by a range of artists performing country songs on the MGM label, novelty songs, and some lesser-known recordings from the famous Sun Studios.

We hope you enjoyed this short show.  Marti will be back at the regular time for Red Rooster Party next Sunday at 2pm.

Playlist - 9/14/2014 - WWVA Performers & more

Hi Folks.

Another spurts-shortened show, but we hope we made the hour interesting.

We had a few short features on this show including a set of music from WWVA (Wheeling WV) stalwarts, Lee Moore (The Coffee Drinking Nighthawk) and Doc & Chickie Williams.  We also played a couple of novelty comedy songs from Homer & Jethro and Lonzo & Oscar, and played a set of story songs.

Tune in next week when Marti will be doing the show solo along with Bluegrass Cafe that follows!
