Playlist - 3/15/2015 - Old Time & Frank Blevins

Hi Folks.

With spurts bracketing the show, our air time was very irregular, but we managed to get about an hour and a half of a show on for you between 1:40 and 3:10 pm.  Marti missed the show because of a conflict.

This show focused more on old time music than anything else with the exceptions of the Marti-less Bunkhouse which consisted of older western songs from Ray Whitley, Elton Britt, and Rex Allen; and some of the closing set of 1950s country duos that included the Louvin Brothers, Johnnie & Jack, and the York Brothers.

The old time music included J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers, a back-to-back comparison of "Salty Dog Blues" by modern-version composers the Morris Brothers and an earlier but different version by Sam McGee, The Georgia Yellow Hammers, The Blankenship Family, Grayson & Whitter, and rare singles from Jack Reedy & His Walker Mountain String Band and the Woodie Brothers.

We also played a set of country blues with Frank Hutchison, the Leake County Revelers, and Cliff Carlisle.

Frank Blevins and Edd Blevins

The centerpiece of the show was the complete recorded works of Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers.  Fiddler Blevins was sixteen when he was recruited by a talent scout to record along with his older brother Edd on guitar and neighbor Frank Miller on banjo, and after two recording sessions between 1927 and 1928, six of his sides had been released.

Frank Blevins, Jack Reedy, Edd Blevins, Muriel Dockery
with Eleanor Roosevelt. 1933 Whitetop Folk Festival

Another four were not released and no known recordings exist today.  Blevins and the Rattlers produced some high energy string band music.  We can only imagine what might have followed had the Great Depression not ended so many early recording careers.

You can follow us on Facebook where we will help you find us among all the spurts preemptions. The address is https://www.facebook.com/WHUS.redroosterparty

We hope you tune in for more great legacy music.
