Playlist - 1/24/2016 - First Show in New Time Slot

Hi Folks.

We have moved to the Sunday morning time slot 7am to 9am for the spring semester at UCONN. This is because of the difficulty carrying on a show with frequent and ugly sports preemptions in the afternoon slot.  We seemed to catch many new listeners at the new time slot, so we hope a whole new group of listeners get to enjoy our mix of old hillbilly, classic country, gospel, and country blues recordings, as well as Joe Bussard's excellent Country Classics program. We expect to move back to the Sunday afternoon slot during the summer.

J. E. Mainer, Jr., the son of the great 1930s fiddler and a good friend of mine, celebrated his 92nd birthday January 22nd, so we had a musical celebration of sorts playing some of his 1946 and 1963 recordings made with his father, and a five minute interview I recorded sometime over the past ten years.

Welcome to all you new listeners!  We hope our long-time listeners get the word and tune in at the earlier time on their Sunday mornings.

Join us Sunday, the 31st, at 7am for our next program.  Joe Bussard will join the program at 8:30am.  You can hear Joe's show for this week here.

Playlist - 1/17/2016 - Post WW2 Country Singers

Hi Folks.

This was our last show before we move our time slot.  Join us next Sunday 7am to 9am at 91.7 FM or http://fm.whus.org/ and we will have the same Red Rooster Party but without the maddening sports preemptions.

Today's show featured post-WW2 country music, especially as it had changed from string ensembles to lead singers over the war period.  There are many theories why this happened, but the one that makes sense to me is that soldiers exposed to other lands and other soldiers from different parts of the country were apt to take on some of the new experiences as their own and leave behind the customs and music of their homes and upbringing.

The new country charts following the war would in some ways not be recognizable as country to a savvy fan.  They included pop songs of the time and singers like Bing Crosby (as opposed to Al Dexter) doing "Pistol Packing Mama".  Nevertheless, we were able to show that country music did exist for sure in the roughly-10-year period after the war and Hank Williams led the way.

We played one of Hank's 1951 Mother's Best programs, and as many of the other artists recording at the time as we could fit into an hour and a half.

Joe Bussard presented his 15th show for Red Rooster Party and WHUS, and continued to surprise us with more great clean sounding 78s from his vast collection.  You can hear it here.

Join us next Sunday AT 7:00 AM for the next edition of the show.

Playlist - 1/10/2016 - Trucking Songs

Red Simpson
Hi Folks.

About 40% of this show was classic country trucking songs triggered by the January 8th death of Red Simpson at the age of 81. Simpson was known primarily for his trucking songs -- his biggest hit was "I'm A Truck" in 1971.  We played that, and several more from Red along with many from his 1960s fellow country artists like Dave Dudley and Red Sovine.

While we began the last show with a Hank Williams song, we did better this week and played ole Hank as well as a bunch of his songs performed by other country artists.  Hank's impact was significant.
Joe Leggo

Joe Leggo is a Connecticut country music artist who wrote a waltz about Connecticut, so we shared his waltz with all the Connecticut folks today.

The Chestnut Grove Quartet rounded out my part of the music with their a cappella gospel.

Joe Bussard's 14th Country Classics program was another half-hour delightful look at some great records from his collection such as one by Mississippi John Hurt that sounded significantly better than the CD reissue from several years back.  Joe's clean original 78s sound amazing.  You can hear Joe's show again at this link.

Tune in next Sunday at 2pm for the last Red Rooster Party at this time slot.  We will be moving the following week to 7-9am Sunday mornings to escape the constant sports preemptions.  We expect to move back to the 2-4 time slot in the summer.
