Playlist - 4/17/2016

Hi Folks.
Bob Bovee in Connecticut 4/15/16

Today's show was a potpourri of song choices that struck me as needing an airing.

The playlist included music from Johnny Paycheck going on about the I.R.S. (a favorite subject), Hank Thompson, Johnny Barfield, Jan Howard, Wynn Stewart, and Glenn Ohrlin.

Also, on the heels of his first Connecticut appearance last Friday, we heard a great old cowboy song from Bob Bovee, and a recent version of an old song from old-time group The Ill-Mo Boys whom you may have discerned are from Illinois and Missouri.

Joe Bussard's portion of the show included several artists making first appearances on the show, including Hoyt Ming & His Pep Steppers, Ridgel's Fountain Citians, William McCoy, Roma Jackson, and Ted Mullins.

Join Marti and me next Sunday for more great sounds from America's country past.

Playlist - 4/10/2016 - Merle Haggard & The Bakersfield Sound

Hi Folks.

The whole show was devoted to the Bakersfield Sound in country music and the influences that created Merle Haggard's musical career.

Roy Nichols, long time Merle Haggard guitarist,
and Lewis Tally,
Merle Haggard's first record producer,
played on this 1955 recording
This included lots of songs from folks like Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Wills, Wynn Stewart, Lefty Frizell, Buck Owens, Bonnie Owens, and more!  We played the earliest recordings of Merle Haggard and several more up to the mid-1960s.  Some of these recordings probably were unknown by even great Merle Haggard fans.

We hope you enjoyed this tribute to a great sub-genre of country music and an unforgettable original singer and songwriter, Merle Haggard.

Joe Bussard presented his 27th show for us.  His playlist is at the bottom of the main playlist, and a link to a soundfile of his show will be posted soon.

Join me next week for more great old music.

Playlist - 4/3/2016

Hi Folks.

Marti is back!  After being away from radio for most of the last year, my spouse rejoined the Red Rooster Party for today's show. It was touch and go because you know she hates snow, and we woke up to some heavy white wet snow on everything, but she persevered and made it.  Unfortunately I have no air check (recording) of the event because of a power outage related to the snow.  That's the way it goes.

Marti and her brother
at Tweetsie Railroad with Fred Kirby
One of the most unusual records on the show today was a 45 RPM single from Fred Kirby, a well-known singing cowboy and television host of kids programs on WBTV in Charlotte in the 1960s and 1970s.  Fred's career began in Charlotte in the 1930s with the WBT Briarhoppers, and after WW2 he was known primarily for his hit single "Atomic Power" - the first song written and released about the atomic bombs used on Japan and the implications of such power for civilization.  In the 1960s, Fred was a featured attraction at another attraction -- Tweetsie Railroad -- in Blowing Rock NC.  Fred's job was to greet folks, especially kids, and perform on the train cars (Tweetsie was and is a real steam locomotive with a track that runs around the mountain.) Fred's job was to chase hostile Indians from the train cars while underway.  The 45 we played was about Tweetsie.

The playlist is below.  Joe Bussard's 26th show for WHUS Red Rooster Party can be heard again at the link next to his part of the playlist.

Be sure to tune in next Sunday morning for another edition of RRP with Jim & Marti!
