Hi Folks.

This show consisted of the first four hours of a seven-hour radio marathon for Jim as he continued with Bluegrass Cafe after Red Rooster Party finished!

Marti programmed nearly all the show, and she came up with some very obscure deep-catalog songs that were just a refreshing today as they might have been when first released.

Playlist - 4/6/2014 - Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith

Hi Folks!

We had a rare full three-hour show today because the sports preemptions missed our time slot.  Woo hoo!

Marti programmed most of the music and came up with a theme of songs about cigarettes (there are many!), a good bit of classic country from the 1930s through the 1950s, and some comedy from Lonzo & Oscar, Smiley Burnette, and Jerry Clower.

The Mostly Obscure and Almost Forgotten segment included Sundown Pete & Margie Lane and our favorite,  Jenks "Tex" Carman.

The last half-hour of the show was a tribute to Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith who died Thursday, April 3rd -- just two days after his 93rd birthday.  Smith was an ever-present and popular musician who led a group of musicians that included his brothers Ralph and Sonny, as well as the great and under-appreciated Tommy Faile, Wayne Haas, and Lois & Ray "Duck" Adkins.  They pioneered a musical variety program on WBTV out of Charlotte NC beginning around 1951 called "Carolina Calling" which most people in the Carolinas saw every morning before heading off to work or school.  That includes Marti and me.  He was on the air in some capacity until the 1980s when his brother Ralph died of cancer at which point he decided he didn't want to continue.  He had the first major recording studio in the region and recorded great artists such as James Brown.

Smith's first big hit was an instrumental he recorded in 1944 that was released in 1945 on the Super Disc label called "Guitar Boogie."  The song was extraordinarily popular, and MGM bought out Super Disc and re-released the single a year or two later on the MGM label where it sold even more copies -- in the millions.  The success of that song led to his moniker of Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith which also served to differentiate him from the old-time fiddler Fiddlin' Arthur Smith.

One of the more significant tunes Smith wrote was "Feudin' Banjos" which he actually co-wrote with Don Reno and recorded in 1955.  Smith played the tenor banjo and traded licks with Don Reno who played the five-string.  The tune showed up in 1963 on The Dillards' first album and on one of their appearances on The Andy Griffith Show.  Then in the early 1970s it showed up again in the movie "Deliverance" at a key moment in the story line, but Smith didn't get credit.  He sued and won and received all the royalties for the song.

We are not certain of the sports schedule next Sunday, but we will let you know if we have a show as soon as we know.  Keep up with what's happening with the show by liking our Facebook page:  Red Rooster Party on WHUS.
