When Joe Bussard was recording his show for today (his 42nd!), he unknowingly got a hold of what he thought was a 60 minute tape that was actually a 73 minute tape, so we got more Joe than usual on this show.
During the time prior to Joe's portion of the show, I was able to play some examples of "manufactured" country music of the 1920s from Vernon Dalhart (Marion Try Slaughter), a trained singer who would grab popular songs of the day and record for every label around. It would not be unusual to find a song recorded by Vernon Dalhart on six different labels. My assessment is that while his music was listenable, especially to listeners of the period, it falls far short of the real thing produced by the likes of (for example) The Skillet Lickers, Ernest V. Stoneman, or the Georgia Yellow Hammers. The latter two appeared elsewhere on the show.
Fisher Hendley, Hugh Cross, and Jimmie Driftwood all made musical appearances on the show, and we focused on some classic country music from the year 1960.
Joe Bussard's 73-minute edition of his Country Classics included Homer Briarhopper (from my neck of the woods in NC); Frank Hutchinson; Dock Boggs, and many more, plus a great batch of early bluegrass from 45 and 78 RPM records from the 1940s through 1950s.
Be sure and listen every Sunday to the great music programming on WHUS including our own Red Rooster Party.
