Hi Folks.

After last week's successful jazz program with Joe Bussard, we went back to Joe's early country classics on this show.  We still had UCONN sports preempting the first hour, but Joe's program was able to run in its entirety.

You can hear Joe's show at this link, or at the link in the playlist below.

Join us next Sunday for at least Joe's program if we are partially or completely preempted.  Joe will run into Bluegrass Cafe if needed.

Playlist- 8/21/2016 - Joe Bussard's Jazz Show

Hi Folks!

UCONN sports is back and we suffered our first preemption of the school year on this show.  Fortunately, we had an hour to play Joe Bussard's program in its entirety.

What a show it was!  Once before early in Joe's run on Red Rooster Party I turned him loose on his jazz records (bear in mind Joe believes jazz ended in 1933.)  Response to that show was subdued at best, so we put off doing another jazz show until this week when Joe cut loose with an hour of his hot jazz records, and the phone in the studio rang off the hook!  (Actually it is a flashing light, so it was more like a Christmas tree)

We were so happy with the response, we will bring another of Joe's jazz programs to Red Rooster Party before too much longer -- perhaps another Sunday in September.  So if you like this now-rare form of early American recorded music, stick with us.

The playlist is below.  To listen again, click on this link or the link at the beginning of Joe's part of the playlist below.

Hi Folks.

For my part of this show I celebrated the 89th anniversary of the historic Bristol Sessions which are are regarded as the "Big Bang of (Commercial) Country Music" because of the discovery of the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers.  We played a tune the Carter Family recorded at the Bristol Sessions followed by a couple more recorded almost exactly 50 years later in the exact same location by the A.L. Phipps Family.  We also played other Bristol Session recordings by J.P. Nestor, Johnson Brothers, and Tenneva Ramblers -- a band Jimmie Rodgers split from about a day before the recordings.

Other great early classics we heard were from Grayson & Whitter, Al Hopkins & His Buckle Busters, Leadbelly, The Prairie Rambers, and Frank Blevins and his Tar Heel Rattlers.

Our classic country segment focused on the year 1959 and included classic songs from Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Stonewall Jackson, Billy Grammer, and Faron Young.

Joe Bussard presented his 44th program of Country Classics that spanned the years 1926 to 1952.

We hope you enjoyed the show.  If you like it or have comments, leave them below in the comments section.

Hi Folks.

Our last show for July included some notable music from The Callahan Brothers, early 20th century performers from Madison County, North Carolina; Georgia fiddler Clayton McMichen; Bill Carlisle along with his slide guitar playing brother Cliff; Jimmie Davis; Roy Acuff; and the relatively rare recording duo of Burnett & Rutherford.
Janette Carter (1923-2006)  Photo by Bob Corn
A wonderful rare recording of Janette Carter (Sara's and A.P.'s daughter) with J. E. Mainer fiddling was in the mix along with several classic country recordings from 1957 and 1958 that included artists like Ferlin Huskey; George Jones; Johnnie & Jack; and the classic Wayne Raney Family song "We Need A Whole Lot More Of Jesus (And A Lot Less Rock And Roll)"

Joe Bussard presented his 43rd program of Country Classics for Red Rooster Party bringing us several 78s from his collection that were very unusual, such as tunes from Marion Underwood; Fiddlin' Powers and Family; Bill Tuttle, and Elder Golden P. Harris.

Tune in next Sunday for another great program of early and classic country music.

Hi Folks.

When Joe Bussard was recording his show for today (his 42nd!), he unknowingly got a hold of what he thought was a 60 minute tape that was actually a 73 minute tape, so we got more Joe than usual on this show.

During the time prior to Joe's portion of the show, I was able to play some examples of "manufactured" country music of the 1920s from Vernon Dalhart (Marion Try Slaughter), a trained singer who would grab popular songs of the day and record for every label around.  It would not be unusual to find a song recorded by Vernon Dalhart on six different labels.  My assessment is that while his music was listenable, especially to listeners of the period, it falls far short of the real thing produced by the likes of (for example) The Skillet Lickers, Ernest V. Stoneman, or the Georgia Yellow Hammers. The latter two appeared elsewhere on the show.

Fisher Hendley, Hugh Cross, and Jimmie Driftwood all made musical appearances on the show, and we focused on some classic country music from the year 1960.

Joe Bussard's 73-minute edition of his Country Classics included Homer Briarhopper (from my neck of the woods in NC); Frank Hutchinson; Dock Boggs, and many more, plus a great batch of early bluegrass from 45 and 78 RPM records from the 1940s through 1950s.

Be sure and listen every Sunday to the great music programming on WHUS including our own Red Rooster Party.

Hi Folks.

We got a little extra time at the start of this show, so we were able to get more early and classic music into the show than usual.

Our part of the show was mostly classic country music from the 1940s through the 1960s with a special focus on the year 1956.

(L to R) Bonnie, Jim Ed, and Maxine Brown
We also paid our respects to Bonnie Brown, a member of The Browns along with older siblings Jim Ed (who just died last year) and Maxine.  Bonnie died the day before our broadcast on June 16, 2016.

Joe Bussard brought some delightful rare 78s from his collection for his 41st show for Red Rooster Party on our last hour.

If you enjoyed our early country musical heritage, we hope you will tune in every Sunday for more great music on Red Rooster Party.  Tell a friend, too.

Hi Folks.
Bud Isaacs

Marti joined the show today and we did a pedal steel guitar primer on this show with the earliest popular use of the pedal steel from Bud Isaacs, both with the breakthrough hit for the instrument, Webb Pierce's "Slowly" and a couple of solo instrumentals from Bud.

We also heard from Johnnie & Jack, Skip Gorman, and Jenks "Tex" Carman among other great early country selections and some western music.

Joe Bussard presented his 40th program of early country classics.

See you soon.

Hi Folks.
J. E. Mainer

We presented another great collection of early and classic country music on this show, topped with a rare laquer radio transcription of unknown origin of J. E. Mainer performing Drunkard's Hiccoughs. J. E. tells the hair-raising tragic event that inspired him to play the song at the beginning.

Significantly, Joe Bussard's program was extended from a half-hour to one full hour starting this Sunday and will continue as an hour segment going forward.  You can here his 39th program here.

We hope you enjoyed what you heard.

See you soon.
