Playlist - 10/30/2016 - Jim's Dad's Birthday Stories

Hi Folks.

For this show I played mostly early country similar to the style of Joe Bussard, but I augmented it with some stories.

Jim's Dad
A couple stories were told by my dad in 1994 when I happened to have a recorder handy.  Since he had his 90th birthday the previous Thursday, I thought we needed to hear from him on the show.

Another story was Wendy Bagwell's classic rattlesnake story where he traveled to play music at a small church with snake handlers.

Joe Bussard presented his 54th program of country classics.

We may be preempted for a soccer tournament next Sunday, but if the team loses on Friday, will will have a show, so check Facebook here or tune it around 2pm ET to see if we are on.

Playlist - 10/23/2016 - Remembering Merle Watson

Hi Folks.

We were back to our regular show today.  The first hour was classic and early country I programmed and the second hour was Joe Bussard's 53rd program of his Country Classics 78 records.

Merle Watson
On October 12, 1985, Marti and I attended a concert at the Charleston Heights Art Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, where we both worked at the time.  The main act was Doc and Merle Watson.  The music we heard that night was life-changing.  In fact, I probably would not be writing this or doing a radio show today if it had not been for that concert event.  Eleven days later on October 23, Merle Watson died as a result of  a bizarre tractor rollover accident at night.

To remember Merle -- the great guitarist, son of Doc Watson, and enabler of his father's career -- I dedicated a half-hour of the show to the music of Doc & Merle Watson in which Merle was a featured performer, either on banjo, guitar, or slide guitar.

We also heard music from Jimmie Driftwood, Howard Vokes, The Louvin Brothers, Lowe Stokes, and bluesman Jim Jackson.

Joe Bussard's 53rd show was packed full of his great country 78s.

Join us next Sunday, sports preemptions notwithstanding, for another great two hours of early and classic country music.

Playlist - 10/16/2016 - Joe Bussard's "Hot Town"

Hi Folks.

No preemptions for this week, so we had a full show.  First hour was early country brought to you by yours truly, and the second hour was Joe Bussard's second one-hour program of jazz which he has now christened "Hot Town" after the Fess Williams record.

Hot Town, Joe's program of early jazz, is unique to Red Rooster Party and WHUS, and as far as I know it is also unique in Joe Bussard's 60+ year radio history, so enjoy it while we have it.  He'll continue to do it once a month as long as I have a show.

Playlist - 9/25/2016

Hi Folks.

It's been a while since an update, but we have only done two shows in the last month because of sports preemptions and travel.

This playlist is for the Sunday, September 25th show.  Jim was actually in North Carolina at the time visiting family, tying up some ends at radio station WPAQ, and attending the IBMA convention in Raleigh, so the show was pre-recorded with Marti.

Additionally, Joe Bussard presented his 51st show for Red Rooster Party at WHUS.

We hope you enjoyed this show.  Keep trying to get us 2-4pm ET on WHUS.  Sports will not preempt us every time.
