Playlist - 4/23/2017

Hi Folks.

Marti joined me on the air today for the show we were not supposed to have because of a sports preemption, but the game moved time slot and we had a show after all.

The first hour of the show we played a range of material from old time to classic country.  This included some cowboy music from Don Edwards and Skip Gorman, and old time music from Benton Flippen, The Freight Hoppers, and The South Carolina Broadcasters.  Gospel music was provided by Early Upchurch from an upcoming collection to be released by Field Recorders Collective, and Tommy Crank.

Joe Bussard
Joe Bussard's 78th country classics program for Red Rooster Party was half Western swing and half early bluegrass.  You can hear Joe's portion of the show again here or at the link in the playlist below.

Marti will host the show next Sunday, but it will be a two-hour special of Joe Bussard's Hot Town Jazz.  You'll not want to miss that.

Happy listening!

Playlist - 4/16/2016 - Easter

Hi Folks.

For this Easter Sunday we played several classic 78s with an Easter theme such as Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper's "Legend of the Dogwood Tree."  We also played some of my recent 78 acquisitions including Joe Franklin, Clayton McMichen, and Byron Parker and his Mountaineers.

Joe Bussard's 77th Country Classics show featured some of the earliest country music ever recorded featuring the likes of Eck Robertson, Fiddlin' John Carson, Samantha Bumgarner, and many more.  Listen again at the link above or in the playlist below.

We are currently scheduled for preemption Sunday April 23rd, but Saturday the 22nd I invite everyone over to Killingly Grange where the doors open at 6pm for a send off bluegrass jam for yours truly and Marti. It will be a grand time.

South Carolina Broadcasters
Hi Folks.

We brought some newer music to the show today.  Long-time listeners know we focus on the period from the 1920s to the 1960s, but we are always on the lookout for new music that sounds like it could have been viable during that time.  We had some good ones in that category today.

We also took advantage of a sports event ending early before our show to grab an extra 40 minutes of "pre-show."  We heard selections from a Doc Watson concert, and some early country music on the Bluebird label from the 1930s.

Newer music on the show came from The South Carolina Broadcasters, Joe Rose, Johnny and Edith Jackson with James Stiltner, and Ralph Stanley II.

We also had some rare radio transcriptions from J. E. Mainer and Bill Monroe leading up to Joe Bussard's 76th program which included a concert by Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper recorded by Joe at New River Ranch in Rising Sun, MD, in 1955.

We hope you enjoyed the music we brought you on this show. Tune in to WHUS next Sunday 2-4 pm ET for another look into our musical legacy followed by Bluegrass Cafe which Jim will also host.

Playlist - 4/1/2017 - A Saturday Special

Hi Folks.

Our show scheduled for Sunday April 2nd was preempted, so we took the opportunity to fill-in for Ms. Lady Mystique Saturday afternoon for a full three hours.  Thank you Lady Mystique!

Jim's portion of the show, the first two hours, was virtually all rare/early/obscure bluegrass 45s.   The labels shown are just a small sampling of the variety.  The playlist is below the pictures.

Joe Bussard presented his 75th show for Red Rooster Party - a Country Classics show that included radio transcriptions from J.E. Mainer in the early 1940s.

Remember, we will not be on Sunday April 2nd, but are planning to be back at our regular time 2-4pm ET Sunday April 9th.
