Playlist - 1/15/2017

Hi Folks.

Today was an all Joe Bussard day, and before you get to the playlist, let me explain why.

Jim and Joe Bussard in late December 2016
I took a trip the day after Christmas to see Joe Bussard in Frederick MD followed by a visit with friends and family in North Carolina.  I was scheduled to return to CT January 7th and host the Red Rooster Party January 8th; however, a half-inch of sleet and freezing rain and an inch of snow shut down the airport in NC I was using, and that delayed my return until late Monday night January 9th.  Marti was prepared to do the January 1st show, but Joe had not sent me his New Year's Day show before I left to go see him, so we aired a show that had been preempted earlier in the year that was still fresh for Red Rooster Party.  Joe gave me his show for January 8th while I was visiting him, so when I was not able to return for the January 8th show, Joe's show for that day didn't make it, either. Marti replayed a great show from 2008 titled "Fred Tales" about dogs (we did that show after we lost our last dog, Fred.) To top this off, Joe's New Year's Day show arrived while I was away.

Whew!

To get all of these shows aired as soon as possible, I decided to give Joe the entire two hour show today instead of his usual hour, and we played his New Year's Day Country Classics show as well as his Hot Town Jazz monthly show which actually was scheduled to air today on the 15th.  We are nearly caught up as soon as we can air Joe's January 8th show.  Perhaps we will do that next week along with the January 22nd show.

Now, on to the playlist.

Joe did a special Hank Williams Tribute for the first half hour, followed by his usual Country Classics, and then brought many obscure jazz classics to us on his Hot Town Jazz show.  We're proud of Joe's Hot Town because it is the only jazz show he has ever done for any radio station, and it is unique to Red Rooster Party and WHUS.

We hope you enjoyed what we played, and will join us next Sunday 2-4pm ET for another great afternoon of classic country music.

Playlist - 1/8/2017 - Fred Tales

Hi Folks.

Jim was delayed returning from a trip to NC, so Marti stepped in and played a show that we originally did in October 2008 titled "Fred Tales."

Fred and Marti
If you had listened to RRP back in 2008 you would have heard us speak of Fred.

Fred was a beagle -- or mostly beagle (Marti called him a "bagle") -- who adopted us right after we moved to Maryland when he was just a pup. He had moved into the woods outside our home just before the previous residents moved, and then cautiously watched us until he decided we were worthy.

That was in 1992. Fred passed away 16 October 2008.

Fred turned out to be one of the best friends we ever had. He and Marti had a bond that went beyond the typical human-animal relationship. She literally knew what Fred was thinking at any time, and I believe he knew what Marti was thinking.

Fred was an outdoor farm dog until we moved to Connecticut in 2001. The proximity of the house to the road along with the cold winters influenced us to let him move inside with us. Not only that, but because he was not capable of staying in the house by himself throughout a whole workday, Marti took him to school daily. It is rare to be able to take a dog to work these days, but Watkinson School allowed that to happen, and in doing so provided Fred many new friends, provided therapy for students, and perhaps extended Fred's life.

In the times we couldn't have Fred with us, Baywood Kennels was his most excellent home-away-from-home. We couldn't have been luckier to have them nearby.

For this show we played songs and comedy bits about dogs or mentioning dogs, and we told "Fred Tales" -- stories we gathered about Fred over the years -- between sets.

We hope you enjoyed our tribute to Fred, and all dogs everywhere.

Playlist - 1/1/2017 - New Year

Hi Folks.

Happy New Year!

For this first show of 2017, Marti took cues from a show she produced two years ago and selected the music except for a couple songs Jim played to fulfill requests.

We heard The Maddox Brothers & Rose during the struggling 1950s where their music took on a more rock & roll aesthetic to remain viable during the times.  We also heard a couple of the earliest recordings of the Dixon Brothers and similar early recordings of Ernest Stoneman.

Perhaps the surprise of the show was a collection of Merle Travis songs transcribed from Jimmy Wakely radio shows of the mid-1950s.  They provided a different take on the aural history of Travis' great picking and singing.

We haven't played much from Eddy Arnold in a while, but we played three of his number 1 country hits on this show including Kentucky Waltz.  Even the song's writer and first performer, Bill Monroe, wasn't able to get the song that high on the country charts.

A couple of great misogynist-themed songs from Texas Jim Robertson provided some humor, but the closing classics fromAndy Griffith, including Preacher and the Bear and What It Was Was Footballsealed it.

Joe Bussard presented his 63rd show for Red Rooster party.  You can hear it again at this link.

We hope you enjoyed our show, and hope you will join us next week when we make another go of it.
